William “Bill” E. Wissen Sr., 85, of Streator passed away at 5:40 PM Friday (April 6, 2018) at O.S.F. St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
There will be no services. Cremation rites will be accorded. The Hagi & Baker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born on January 11, 1933 in Streator to Lloyd & Lorraine (Brown) Wissen. He married the former Mary Lou McKeon. She survives in Streator.
He is survived by his significant other, Jan Swartz of Streator; his children: Paula (Max) Foltin of Streator, Bill (Mary Kay Cavanaugh) Wissen Jr. of Savannah, GA, Gary (Debbie) Wissen of Streator, Debbie (John) Coley of Streator, Charlie Wissen of Streator, Lori (Greg) Schmitt of Streator, Tim Wissen of Streator Jennifer Swartz and Janell Swartz both of Streator; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and his furry pets, Polly, Kane, Gracie, Teddi and his cats. He was known as “pappy” to his grand dogs Kane and Gracie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Paul Wolfe, a great grandson, Hunter Wolfe; brothers: Lloyd Wissen Jr, Fred Wissen and a sister, Betty Drosten.
Bill served in the United States Navy during during the Korean War. He had worked for his fathers Sanitation business, served as a Streator Fireman and as a custodian at Oakland School. He also owned and operated Wissen’s Concessions at many carnivals and events.
He resided in Streator all of his life.
He was a former member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and belonged to the Monsignor George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790 and Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492. He was a Cubs fan and was a great grandfather to his grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice or the American Kidney Foundation.
