Vincent Arthur Werner 89 a lifelong farmer in Streator and Long Point died Tuesday (Sept. 6, 2011) at 11:50 AM at St. Mary's Hospital, Streator.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday at First United Methodist Church , Streator with Rev. Jerry Haley, officiating. Grandsons, Jason, Jeff, Joel and Robert Werner will sing Precious Lord Take My Hand and How Great Thou Art. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM Monday at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator. Burial will be in Grand Rapids Cemetery , rural Grand Ridge.
Mr. Werner was born May 9, 1922 at home in Long Point, the son of Arthur and Clara (Voights) Werner. He married Luceille Marie Gleim, October 26, 1946 at the Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church , Streator. She survives. He lived in this area his entire lifetime.
Vince and Luceille expanded their farm operation over the years and son Phillip continues with farming. They were married sixty four years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church , Streator Masonic Lodge # 607 AF & AM, Farm Bureau and was a licensed auctioneer. He was a graduate of Long Point High School , class of 1940.
Vince was well known by many in the area. He was kind and generous to all he knew. Vince trained his sons to respect the land and to care for it. He enjoyed having his family around and he taught them the value of a farm heritage. Vince liked to experiment with new farming techniques and was one of the first area farmers to custom apply anhydrous ammonia in 1957.
He is survived by his wife Luceille of Streator, two sons, Phillip (Ann) Werner, Streator and John (Joyce) Werner, Bloomington, grandchildren, Deborah, David, Robert and Kristina Werner, Jason (Laurie), Jeff (Elizabeth) and Joel (Kristin) Werner, one great grandchild, Jacob Jonathan Werner, a second great grandchild on the way, a sister-in-law, Mary (Davis) Small and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ronelva Wonders and Uretta Barickman.
Pallbearers will be John Small, David Werner, Jason Werner, Jeff Werner, Joel Werner, and Robert Werner. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Barickman, Benny Beutke, Jim Chalkey, Keith Detrick, Don Harcar, Jene Henry, and Roger Seeger.
Memorials may be made to the family to be distributed among Vince's many favorite charities.
