STREATOR_ Roy B. Rathbun 86 of Streator died Monday morning (May 7, 2012) at St. Mary’s Hospital, Streator.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator with Rev. Jerry Haley, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 PM Thursday at Hagi Funeral Home with the Masonic Ritual recited at 7:00 PM. Burial with full military rites, conducted by members of American Legion Post # 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492 will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.
Mr. Rathbun was born Aug. 26, 1925 in Streator, the son Edward and Ethel (Wonders) Rathbun. He married Rose Ragusa, Jan. 10, 1948 in Streator, she survives.
Roy was the former Streator City Clerk a position he held for eleven years. He was employed by the LaSalle County Treasurers office for twenty five years, sixteen of which were as the LaSalle County Treasurer. He was a member of the former Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion Post # 217, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492 a former member of Elks Lodge # 591 and had been active with Masonic Lodge # 607 all of Streator. Roy attended Streator grade schools and was a graduate of Streator High School, class of 1942 where he played football his senior year, his team was inducted into the Streator High School Hall of Fame. He was a committee member and instrumental in renaming the gymnasium at Streator High School to the “Pops Dale Gymnasium”. Roy served in the US Navy in WWII in the South Pacific with the 5 th Amphibious Force where he received four battle stars.
He is survived by his wife Rose, one daughter, Robin A. (William) Redman, Bloomington, one son, Rodney (Debbie) Rathbun, Streator, five grandchildren Troy (Lynn) Rathbun, Tara (Mitch) Jacoby, Trent (Cathy) Rathbun, Eric (Brandy) Redman and Natalie (Jason) White, eleven great grandchildren (and another due in two weeks), and one brother, Lee (Jennie) Rathbun, Streator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, Richard and Rebecca in infancy, four sisters, Verna Clayton, Ora Goerne, Maxine Casey and Vera Sowerby.
Pallbearers will be Troy and Trent Rathbun, Eric Redman, Mitch Jacoby, Jason White and Ryan Lovins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Larry Casey, David Sowerby, Jim Goerne and Edward Rathbun.
Memorials may be made to Spina Bifida Association.
