August 8, 1951 — May 15, 2025

Streator

Robert L. Kersmarki, 73 of Streator, IL passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025, surrounded by family.

Bob was born August 8, 1951 in Salem, Ohio, the son of Karl and Doris (Waithman) Kersmarki. He married Chere Baria on September 30, 1977 in Columbiana, OH. She survives along with a daughter, Kimberly (Anthony) Kersmarki Ponta of Morris; a son, Robert Eric Kersmarki of Braidwood; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Jase, Riley, Sara, and Katie. He is also survived by his mother, Doris Kersmarki at the age of 96.

He was preceded in death by his father, Karl; and a sister, Cindy O’Brian

Bob attended Youngstown State University as well as Kent State University, majoring in Broadcast Communications. In 1977, at age 26, he was the youngest General Manager in the United States at Radio Station WRGT in West Virginia. He went on to manage WRRO in Warren, OH, where he was renowned for promotions. Among his favorites were the Classic Car Giveaway and Hold on to the Rock, a promotion conducted mid-winter. Bob’s radio career began in 1972 when every shift had a live announcer, each disc jockey picked out records and the station was directly connected to its community. It was this sense of community he brought to his management style. Later, Bob then built and supervised multiple groups of stations in the state of Illinois. While a General Manager and Vice President of WIZZ, WYYS, and WSTQ, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Red Cross and Salvation Army, overseeing highly successful fund-raising initiatives, one of which was Hollywood Nights. This event involved the entire community and was repeated for multiple years. Bob also loved Ham Radio and achieved the Extra Classification. He was currently involved in building another Ham Radio to transmit around the world.

Robert attended Lighthouse Christian Church in Streator, and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in the months before his passing. He will be dearly missed by his family. They will find comfort in knowing he is finally home with his savior, Jesus Christ.
