With profound sadness and immeasurable love, we announce the passing of Michael G. Freeman, a devoted father, cherished Papa, beloved brother, loyal friend, and a man whose larger-than-life spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Born on September 29, 1958, in Streator, Illinois, Michael was one of seventeen children born to Fred and Edna Freeman. Growing up in a large family taught him the importance of hard work, resilience, and determination; qualities that remained at the heart of who he was throughout his life.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where his determination and strong sense of duty took root and would define the way he lived the rest of his life.

Above all else, Michael was a family man. He leaves behind his children: Josh Krasnican, Michael (Melinda), Joseph (Victoria), Brandon (Andrea), and Brett (Miranda) Freeman, each of whom carries forward his strength, humor, and generous heart. His greatest pride, however, was found in being “Papa” to his treasured grandchildren: Connor, Madalyn, Isla, Maci, and Jameson Freeman. Also, his two step-granddaughters: Audreece and Arliohna. There was no title he wore more proudly than Papa. Whether sharing stories, creating memories, or simply spending time together, his grandchildren were the light of his life and the center of his world.

Michael is also lovingly remembered by his brothers, Craig, Phillip, and Thomas Freeman; his sister, Sandy Arroyo; his loving companion and caregiver during his final days Dana Fox; the mother of his children, Brenda Krasnican; and countless dear friends who were blessed by his kindness and friendship.

Michael believed life was meant to be lived. He had a passion for aviation that few could match, even fulfilling a dream many only imagine by owning his very own airport. He found freedom in the sky just as he did on the open road. Whether riding motorcycles, admiring vintage cars, or taking his RV to explore campgrounds and state parks, Michael was always chasing the next adventure.

When the weekend arrived, there was a good chance you’d find Michael at a local venue, dancing to live music with not a care in the world. His joy was contagious, his smile unforgettable, and he had a remarkable way of making everyone around him feel welcome. He embraced every moment with enthusiasm and reminded those around him that life is meant to be celebrated.

While our hearts are broken by his passing, we are forever grateful for the years, the memories, the laughter, and the unconditional love he gave so freely. His legacy will live on in every lesson he taught, every story shared, every grandchild’s smile, and every life he touched.

Some people leave behind memories. Michael leaves behind a standard of how to love wholeheartedly, laugh often, and live without hesitation. Everyone deserves to have a Michael - a Papa - in their life, and those of us who did will carry his love with us forever.

In accordance with Michael’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Oakley Avenue Klub (K of C) in Streator on August 16th from 12-4 pm where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man who meant so much to so many.

The world is a little quieter without him, but Heaven is undoubtedly a little livelier. We find comfort knowing that while we mourn his absence, he is at peace and is no longer in pain.

Until we meet again… keep dancing, Papa.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life…nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
