STREATOR- Melvin Bates 81 of Streator died Tuesday evening (Aug. 21, 2012) at St. Luke’s Hospital, Houston Texas.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday (Aug. 25) at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Streator with Rev. Daniel Stalker, officiating. There will be no visitation. Hagi Funeral Home, Streator is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bates was born on a farm near Rutland June 22, 1931, the son of Glen and Zelma (Rowland) Bates. He married Lois Lundy, Jan. 7, 1961 in Streator. She survives.
Melvin had been employed as a machine repairman at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. Streator for forty years, prior to his retirement in 1994. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a graduate of Wenona High School. He served in the US Army.
He is survived by his wife Lois, three daughters, Sharon Collins, Streator, Glenda (Miguel) Castillo, Houston TX and Sandra (Randy) Luttrell, Champaign, two sons, Paul (Debbie) Bates, Bloomington and Bruce (Vickie) Bates, Arbuckle, California, eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Lila Moore, Streator, three brothers, Dayl (Eva) Bates, Rutland, Henry Bates, Oglesby and Crawford Bates, Ottawa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Darlene Ross and Alice Nichols.
