Major Bastien

Major Rene Bastien, 82, of Streator, passed away at 3:09 AM Wednesday (June 26, 2019) at O.S.F. St. James Medical Center in Pontiac.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10-11 AM Tuesday at the Hagi & Baker Funeral Home.  Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at the funeral home.  Rev. Simon Taabu of St. Michael the Archangel Church will officiate.

She was born on March 14, 1937 in Pine Prairie, Louisiana to Armile & Vernice (Fontenot) Ortego.  She married Roland P. Bastien on June 13, 1964 in New Orleans.  He preceded her in death on November 3, 2018.

She is survived by her sons:  Wade Bastien of Los Gatos, CA, Kevin Bastien of Covington, GA a daughter Jane (Brad) Schupp of Congerville; 4 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter and a brother, Harry Ortego of Bethel, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Major received her Bachelor’s in Education from University of Southwestern Louisiana and her Masters from Illinois State University.

She taught in New Orleans and then at Streator Township High School teaching typing and shorthand.  She then taught at St. Mary’s Grade School and retired as a Guidance Counselor from Woodland.

She was a Master Quilter, loved knitting, sewing and crocheting.
