Born December 31,1933 in Streator, Il, Jean was the daughter of Byron and Evelyn (Hopper) Voights. She was raised on a farm near Streator, IL. Jean attended Otter Creek Grade School and graduated from Streator Township High School. During those years she studied piano and enjoyed taking dance lessons. She went on to study business administration at Bradley University and was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She married the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Swanson, on August 29,1954 at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Streator, IL. They went on to build a life together on a farm near Ransom, Illinois where they raised four children. During her children’s years at Ransom Grade School, she enjoyed volunteering as a 4-H leader and classroom mother. Jean and her husband, Jerry, farmed in the Ransom area for their lifetime. Together they enjoyed winters in Florida, until her husband’s death in 1996, after which Jean remained on the farm and managed it until her death.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Debra (Mark) Lyons, Cinda (Martin) Pembroke; her son, Scott Swanson; grandsons, Patrick (Kristin) Lyons and Axel (Mary) Swanson; granddaughters, Amanda (Daniel) Sfiligoj and Megan Pembroke. She is also survived by 5 great grandsons, Landon and Jace Lyons and Thomas, Martin and Daniel Sfiligoj.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Swanson; her son, John Swanson; her grandson, Matthew Pembroke; and her daughter-in-law, Patricia O’Brien.

In recent years, Jean loved spending time with her children and grandchildren on the family farm; often gathering for a barbecue and picnic in the wooded area of her west yard. She enjoyed tending to her garden, quiet times in nature and the beauty and peace of country living. Jean will be dearly missed by her loving family; she will be laid to rest in Ransom, Il alongside her husband, son and grandson. She will rest in eternity near her home on the farm that she loved.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ransom United Methodist Church, where Jean was a member.
