Coming as shock to family and friends was the sudden death of George G. “Gil” Wargo 79 of Streator who died Tuesday morning at Methodist Medical Center , Peoria .
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator with Rev. Jane Esterline and Charles Cline, officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-5:00 PM Sunday at Hagi Funeral Home. Burial with full military rites conducted by members of American Legion Post # 217 and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post # 1492 will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery , rural Streator.
Mr. Wargo was born Oct. 5, 1931 in Painters addition in Streator the son of George and Laura (Ahrens) Wargo. He married Gayle Brehman, Mar. 14, 1959 at Park Presbyterian Church, Streator. She survives.
Gil had been employed at Streator Dependable Manufacturing, BWD Corp./ Dana Corp., Ottawa, retiring in 1999. He was a member of American Legion Post # 217, Illinois LST Association and a vice president of Streatorland Food Pantry. He attended Streator grade schools and was a graduate of Streator High School , class of 1949. He served in the US Navy from Dec. 5, 1951 to Dec. 1955 aboard LST # 1081 PIMA/CO and # 1116 ARL-21 Proserpine that was made in Seneca. Gil was an avid bowler and received several awards with the SMBA, including bowler of the year 1980-1981 he was also a member of the Bowling Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife Gayle of Streator, one daughter, Debra (Amos) Rogers, Streator, three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren, two sisters, Glenda (Dominic) Green, Seneca and Maxine Elliot (Joe) Thomas, Anderson IN, two sisters-in-law, Edith Voights, Streator and Jeanne Trewartha, Dwight, two brothers-in-law, Loren (Ruby) Brehman and James Brehman, both of Streator along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Richard Trewartha and Raymond Voights.
Pallbearers will be John, David and Robert Trewartha, Virl Voights, Aaron Blakemore and Bruce Dominic. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Blakemore, Bruce and Delbert Brehman and Arnold and Amos Rogers, Larry and Brad Goerne, Kyle Voights, Jeff Elliot, Brad and Ross Bacon.
Memorials may be made to the Streatorland Food Pantry, Wolf Creek Cemetery Association or the Streatorland Historical Society.
Gil was a devoted family member and closely associated with niece and nephew Jeannie and Mike Blakemore and will be sadly missed.
