STREATOR IL- Dominic Cantello Jr. 72 of Streator died Wednesday morning (Feb. 19, 2014) at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
Private family funeral services were held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood.
Hagi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cantello was born May 21, 1941 in Streator the son of Dominic V. and Dorothy (Jacek) Cantello Sr. He married Ruth Vagasky who survives.
Dominic served in the United States Navy for 22 years as an electrician during the Vietnam War and then became a manager of the central office for Verizon Telephone in New Brunswick NJ. While serving with the US Navy in Antarctica at McMurdo Station he had a mountain named after him. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Streator High School. He was a member of American Legion Post # 217, Streator.
Dominic was a faithful Christian who enjoyed reading the Bible daily.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Vagasky Cantello, Streator, one daughter, Caryn Edelbach, North Haledon NJ, one son Paul Cantello, Hawthorne NJ, three grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Danielle Edelbach, North Haledon NJ, his mother, Dorothy Freese and sisters, Karen and Lisa all of Illinois and brother Christopher of Florida, also surviving was his faithful companion, his Shih Tzu dog, Jolie.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister Judy Cantello.
