STREATOR-  Charles “Chuck” Snyder 86 of Streator died Wednesday evening (May 1, 2013) at Heritage Health, Minonk.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator with Sister Laura Northcraft, officiating, Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 AM Saturday at Hagi Funeral Home. Burial with full military rites conducted by members of American Legion Post # 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492 will be in Riverview Cemetery, Streator.
Mr. Snyder was born Mar. 12, 1927 in Streator the son of Charles and Gwendolyn (Andrews) Snyder. He married Joan Reschke, Mar. 28, 1953 in Waukegan. She survives.
Chuck had been employed at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. for several years and later took over the management of Snyder’s Tavern, also known as the Hickory Club in Streator for twenty three years, retiring in 1989. He had served as the President of the Illinois Retail Liquor Association and was active with youth baseball in Streator and had been in charge of the umpires at Bodznik Field. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy and also served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post # 217 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492, both of Streator. Chuck attended Streator grade schools, he left high school to serve in the US Navy and spent his tour of duty in the Philippines and upon his discharge from the service he received his GED from Streator High School he soon enlisted in the US Army and was sent to Germany. He was of the Catholic faith.
His love of baseball took him to umpiring Little League games at Mariner Field, which led to Chuck being in charge of the umpires at Bodznik Field. Many evenings were spent studying the rule book, keeping everything fresh in his mind.
He was an avid follower of his grandchildren’s baseball and football games, offering tips on batting stances and other suggestions which were always taken by them. His death leaves a big hole in all our lives.
He is survived by his wife Joan, two sons, Michael (fiancé Sara Anderson) Snyder, Dana and Robert (Lucretia Chiusano) Snyder, Jacksonville FL, four grandchildren, Kayla (Aaron) McClanahan, Chelsey, Tanner and Mathew Snyder, two great grandchildren, Sophie McClanahan and Julieanne Snyder.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Charles “Chuckie” Snyder.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the donor’s choice.
